How Long Does it Take to Build a Pool?

How Long Does it Take to Build a Pool?

01/31/2019 | Categories: Pool Design

This is a great question because many people underestimate the actual time it takes to go from initial design and consultation to having a backyard pool that’s ready to swim in. Not taking the total construction process into account is why so many people end up waiting too long to start on their pool.

From our years of experience, we can tell you that the earlier you start on your swimming pool, the better. When spring starts, all of the reputable and qualified pool builders will have full schedules. Of course, your swimming pool will still get completed and at the same level of quality, it just becomes difficult to predict potential delays.

Initial Consultation to Starting Pool Construction

This is the stage that most people don’t think about. When people say it takes 6-8 weeks to build a pool, they mean actual construction time. The time from when you first contact a pool builder to when you start construction can vary quite a bit. This time includes the initial design of the pool, working out all the details and features, selecting materials, and then coming up with an overall final design.

Also in this stage is permitting. The length of time it takes to get all the approvals and permits is mostly out of the control of the pool contractor. Sometimes it can be a waiting game until everything comes through and it’s time to bring in the equipment to start digging.

Constructing the Swimming Pool

Once the design is finalized and all the permits are ready, then it’s time to start excavation. This takes about a week. Of course, digging a hole in the ground doesn’t work well in mud. So weather can play a factor.

When excavation is complete, the plumbing, electrical, and steel foundation of the pool is completed. This usually takes a couple of weeks depending on the complexity of the project.

After the hole has been dug and all the plumbing and electrical is in place, the gunite is applied. The gunite has to cure and this can take up to a week. Then the tile is placed, coping is installed, and the decking is built. Finally, plaster is added.

When the pool itself is complete, landscaping and water features are completed. This, of course, varies greatly based on the type of landscaping and the number and complexity of water features.

This process is the 6-8 weeks people refer to when saying how long it typically takes to build a swimming pool.

The Actual Time to Build a Pool

The overall time it takes to go from first contact with your builder to when your swimming in your pool can actually be up to 10 weeks. This is a realistic estimate based on all the variables and really isn’t that long when you consider the change your backyard is going to undertake. However, add to this a busy season when all the good pool builders have full schedules and you can potentially add even more time. That’s why you need to start now.

We want you to be swimming this spring! So don’t wait. Remember that the process to become a pool owner is longer than just the time it takes to build a pool. This is true for all quality pool builders who want to make sure you get the pool of your dreams. So get started today!
