A Pool Builder’s Ethics and Business Skills Matter

A Pool Builder’s Ethics and Business Skills Matter

09/08/2020 | Categories: Pool Builder

An important part of the pool buying process is education. Swimming pools have advanced a lot in just the past decade. Advances in construction techniques, energy efficiency, and sanitation technology make pool ownership much simpler and more affordable than in the past. Unfortunately, there are still pool companies that have not embraced the advances within our industry. At Sunshine Fun Pools we want you to be delighted with your pool and your pool-buying experience.

This multi-part guide should give you the information you need to separate the competent and trustworthy pool builders from all the rest.

Pool Builder Ethics & Business Skills

Below are a few questions that you should ask your pool builder prior to hiring them for your project, as their ethics and business skills matter when choosing the right builder.

“Have you ever declared bankruptcy or gone out of business?”

This should be an easy question for a pool builder to answer. Those who have not will respond with a resounding, “No.” Those who have are well aware that thanks to the Internet, their secrets are no longer safe. So they’ll either have to admit it, and give you a sad story about why it wasn’t their fault, or you simply won’t hear from them again.

“Can you provide contact information for suppliers or vendors that you do business with?”

This is a great source of information because suppliers who’ve been cheated by a pool builder will be more than happy to tell you about it. Even more importantly, if the pool builder doesn’t pay the suppliers’ bills, the homeowner may get stuck in the middle by being included in liens or lawsuits.

“Will my checks be made payable to a company or an individual?”

When the company name and the principal’s name are the same, it can be difficult to discern between bank accounts. For example, if the pool builder’s name is Johnny Smith, and the check is made out to “Johnny Smith,” then he could go to your bank and cash the check and avoid paying any state or Federal income taxes. When you write out a check to a company that is incorporated (“Inc.”), or has the principal’s name as only part of the company name (e.g., “Johnny Smith Pool Construction Co.”), then the bank is required to deposit the check in the pool builder’s checking account. This greatly reduces the likelihood that the builder is going to run off with your money.
