Don’t Let Your Pool Give You March Madness
03/25/2022 | Categories: Pool Maintenance Tips
March Madness is here! For basketball fans, March is the most magical time of the year when underdogs can rise up and top seeds can fall. But for pool owners, March brings another type of madness.
Top seeds can fall in our world, too, especially from the tops of oak and elm trees. Add in the high winds, extreme pollen counts, blooming flowers, and the start of yard mowing season, and you can easily see why March can be a challenge to pool owners. Not to mention emerging insects, spring storms, leftover winter leaves that didn’t get raked, and the term “madness” is most appropriate.
But rejoice. March will be gone before you know it and like the champion that will get crowned in basketball, you can be a champion of your pool.
What Do I Do?
The biggest concern we get asked at Sunshine Fun Pools is, “How do I handle all these leaves, seeds, and spores?” The best advice is a good pole and a net.
Daily and sometimes twice-daily netting may be required because even the best pool filtration systems simply won’t be able to keep up. Keeping skimmers emptied on a daily or twice-daily routine is imperative. Your pool most likely circulates 24-hours a day if you have a variable-speed pump, which is good. This simply means your pool is constantly skimming which reduces pole work. However, the skimmers will fill and must be emptied often in order to function properly.
Another concern is, “Why didn’t my pool get cleaned today?” If you have a weekly pool cleaning service, please understand that it is not possible to manage the typical March debris load on a weekly basis. As previously mentioned daily or twice-daily netting and skimmer clean is essential. We commonly see a pool that is perfectly clean in the morning can look untouched by the time the client gets home from work. If spending a little personal time each day to manage debris isn’t possible, consider twice-weekly or every other day service, at least for March.
“My pool has algae!” Well, it may. Or, it could be the massive green pollen cloud that descends upon your pool, car, and house every time the wind blows. The same pollen that puts a green haze on everything else can also add a green tint to pool water. Keeping your pool chemistry balanced and adding a preventive algaecide goes a long way towards ensuring the green in your pool is just pollen, not algae. Think of it as something else that is popular in March. “Green beer” may have a hint of green too, but it’s still good.
